The
Republic of Angola became an independent nation in November 11th 1975,
after more than 500 years of Portuguese settling. Its basic law date
from 1975 - Constitutional Law - and has come to suffer to some
alterations due to the implementation of the democratic and
multi-party system, the magnifying of the recognition of the
guarantees, the rights and the basic freedoms of the citizens and the
fundamental principles of the market economy.
The
Constitution declares as basic objective the construction of a free
and democratic society, which guarantees the rights and basic
freedoms of the man, that guarantees the liberty of speech and the
right of assembly and association, that respects the freedom of
worship and, finally, that allows the ownership and the
protection of the private property.
The sovereignty inhabits in the people who exerts the politic power
through periodic universal suffrage, of democratic form, from the 18
years of age. The last legislative and presidential elections has been
carried in September of 1992.
